“And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” – Acts 1.9-11
This passage in Acts records the story of Christ’s ascension. What a scene that must have been on the Mount of Olives that day! What is particularly noteworthy are the words of encouragement given to the disciples; “This same Jesus… shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” Think of it: “This same Jesus” that sacrificed Himself for the sin of the world, will come again. “This same Jesus” who offers eternal salvation to anyone who will by faith receive Him as their personal Savior, will come again. “This same Jesus” who gives believers the ability to resist Satan and walk in the Spirit, will come again. I can see now why the disciples were so encouraged standing there on the mountain. Dear Christian, “this same Jesus” has and will continue to do great things for us, but there is still more to come! For the Bible says that one day very soon “this same Jesus… shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” May God help each of us to live our life so that when we see the very same Jesus that gave His life for us, we will not be ashamed.
