“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” – 1 Jn 4.4
One of the most popular clothing and sports companies in the world today is Nike Inc. Nike as a company ranks number one on the world market in athletic shoes, apparel and sports equipment. The company derives its name from the Greek goddess of victory, named Nike. For a company making sports equipment you can see why having your business’s name mean “victory” might be appealing. What does all of this have to do with our text in first John chapter four? Notice the word “overcome” in our text; it is the English translation of the Greek word “nike.” In other words, God is saying that as His children we have overcome (nike) the world and its system. We do this, as the rest of the verse explains, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Submitting to the Holy Spirit’s direction in your life will give you the ability to have victory over the temptation of the world. Whenever I see someone wearing Nike clothing it often brings to mind the spiritual reality, that as a child of the King I have living within me the power to overcome the world. May God help us to live like His children, in the world but not of the world, until He comes again.
